Conference

9th Toulouse Economics and Biology Workshop

June 2–3, 2022

Toulouse, TSE/IAST Building

Background and objective

The theme of the 9th Toulouse Economics and Biology worshop is “Production and Sharing”.

As a species, Homo sapiens stands out as somewhat of an oddity due to the sharp division of labor across sexes and ages. Moreover, this division of labor is accompanied by extensive sharing of resources within communities. Much research in economics, (evolutionary) biology, and (evolutionary) anthropology has been devoted to the following question, which is proposed to be the central question of the workshop: What are the determinants and consequences of production and sharing choices? The three disciplines have tended to focus on different aspects of this question. First, economists have tended to examine the reasons behind the failure of formal insurance markets to develop and the ensuing consequences for investment decisions. Second, biologists have tended to focus on how animals within a society negotiate their respective amounts of reproduction in order to maximize their inclusive fitness. Third, anthropologists have focused on documenting age profiles of productivity across diverse ecologies, sharing dynamics (especially what is shared, who shares with whom, and why sharing occurs), and their implications for understanding the evolution of human life histories). Given this diversity in the kinds of perspectives and subquestions, we see a great potential for fruitful interactions.

Besides the plenary sessions, there will be a poster session to which post-docs and Ph.D. students are most welcome to submit applications (abstract + CV + cover letter) to econbio_poster@iast.fr no later than March 31, 2022.
