Conference

8th IAST/TSE Conference in Political Science and Political Economy: Inequality, Migration, and Organized Interests

May 3–4, 2021

Background and objective

In the past, the political economy and political science conferences at IAST focused on the study of electoral politics, including such topics as voting behavior, party competition, electoral accountability, and electoral institutions. In contrast, this year’s conference will concentrate on distributive conflicts related to inequality and migration in democratic countries, and the extent to which organized interests shape and are influenced by these conflicts. This theme is motivated by the increasingly uneven distribution of economic gains from globalization and technological change in developed and emerging democracies, two trends that deserve more attention by social science research. Entrenched interests and well-organized groups are likely to respond to sharp changes in economic or social conditions, by advocating for desired policies directly or by attempting to shape the current political agenda and citizens’ preferences. At the same time, organized interests’ attempts to influence the political process are themselves at least partly shaped by external pressures posed by automation, rising inequality, and immigration.
