Résumé
Why do people share food or exchange favors? In this talk I trace the origins of these behaviors through the primate lineage and in small-scale human societies. Using broad comparative analyses across species and societies as well as more focused case studies in great apes and the Tsimane of Bolivia, I outline how sharing and exchange can solve certain adaptive problems and are influenced by market forces.
