DESCRIPTION:Alberto Acerbi (University of Trento)\, “The cultural ecology o
 f social media”\, IAST General Seminar\, Toulouse: IAST\, June 16\, 2026\,
11:30–12:30\, room Auditorium 5 (Second floor - TSE Building).\n\nMost re
search on social media considers them as supports for transmission of info
rmation\, explaining online success (and pathologies) by focusing on consu
mers’ biases and interests. In my talk I will present a different perspect
ive\, applying ideas from an ecological approach to culture to social medi
a informational dynamics. I will argue that success online depends both on
the intrinsic appeal of content to receivers and on how well content serv
es producers’ strategic goals within the constraints and affordances of sp
ecific platforms. These goals include reputation management\, coalition bu
ilding and identity management\, and coordination or participation in shar
ed activities. Transmission is often a by-product of these motivations\, a
nd replication fidelity plays a limited role compared with transformations
that adapt content to local incentives. Finally\, I will suggest that pla
tforms and communities can be understood as distinct ecological niches\, e
ach characterised by different audience structures\, affordances\, metrics
\, and algorithmic pressures. This perspective offers novel insight to per
sistent debates on social media dynamics\, such as misinformation\, radica
lisation and polarisation\, and the reasons behind online success.
