UN Secretary-General Appoints New Panel on Digital Cooperation

Jean Tirole Joins Melinda Gates and Jack Ma on the High-Level Panel

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the launch of a High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation. Jean Tirole, 2014 Nobel laureate in economic sciences and Chairman of the Toulouse School of Economics and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse has been appointed to the panel led by Melinda Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group.

The 20 appointed members are worldwide interdisciplinary experts from government, private industry, civil society, academia and the technical community (see full list here).

The cross-border panel will analyze digital technologies and highlight social and economic potential as well as risks to prevent unforeseen consequences and contribute to public debate. They will do so by identifying policy, research and information gaps, and making proposals to strengthen international cooperation in the digital space and ensure a safe and inclusive digital future in account to human rights norms.
